अर्थ — Artha as Purushartha

Wealth as a Dharmic Goal of Human Life

Artha ConceptPurusharthaManu SmritiArthashastra

The four Purusharthas — the four goals of human life recognised in Dharmashastra — are: Dharma (righteous conduct), Artha (wealth and prosperity), Kama (desire, pleasure), and Moksha (liberation).

Artha occupies the second position. Unlike material-only economic philosophies, the Dharmic framework insists that Artha must be earned within Dharma. Kautilya's Arthashastra (~321 BCE) is the most systematic ancient Indian economic text.

Dharmic vs Adharmic Artha

Adharmic Artha

Theft, fraud, exploitation — condemned in Manu Smriti; considered Paapa (demerit).
