The Hierarchy of Knowledge
Śruti — Directly Heard
The Vedas and Upanishads are "heard" — revealed knowledge passed directly from the divine to the rishis in states of deep meditation. They form the unquestionable foundation of all Dharmic knowledge.
Smṛti — Remembered
Smritis are "remembered" — composed by human sages based on memory and Shruti. They include Itihasas, Puranas, Dharma-shastras, and Smritis, adapting eternal truths for the practical world.
Darśana — Philosophy
The six Darshanas (Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimamsa, Vedanta) offer systematic philosophical inquiry into the nature of reality, knowledge, and liberation.
