The Shodasha Mahadanas (16 Great Donations) are codified in Manu Smriti 4.229–235, Vishnu Purana, and Padma Purana. Each Mahadana is a specific act of giving with specified materials, beneficiaries (primarily Brahmanas), and described spiritual merit (Phala). Gau-dana (cow donation) is considered the highest, while Anna-dana (food giving) and Vidya-dana (knowledge donation) are most accessible in Kali Yuga.

Annadana — The Most Accessible Mahadana

Bhagavad Gita 17.20 directly addresses the Sattvic Dana: "Datavyam iti yad danam diyate'nupakarine, deshe kale ca patre ca tad danam sattvikam smrtam" — "Charity given as a matter of duty to a worthy person in the right place and time, without expecting anything in return, is Sattvic." Annadana (food donation) is accessible to all and bears equal Dharmic merit.
