Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Purify yourself with a bath, preferably before sunrise or at dawn.
  2. Sit facing south (Dakshinabhimukha) — the direction of Pitru Loka.
  3. Wear a darba/kusha ring (Pavitram) on the right ring finger.
  4. Fill a copper vessel with water, black sesame seeds, and a blade of kusha grass.
  5. Recite the Sankalpa mantra — stating your name, gotra, tithi, and the ancestor's name.
  6. Hold the vessel in both palms; use the right ring finger to guide the pour.
  7. Pour through the ring-finger gap (not the thumb side — that is reserved for Deva tarpana).
  8. Repeat 3 times for father, 3 for grandfather, 3 for great-grandfather.
  9. Add 3+ tarpanas for the maternal grandfather's lineage if applicable.
  10. Conclude with the Universal Ancestor Mantra for all unknown/forgotten ancestors.
