Pinda Dana

Pinda Dana (पिण्ड दान) — the sacred offering of rice balls — is the physical component of Shraddha that nourishes the subtle bodies of departed ancestors.

What is a Pinda?

A Pinda is a ball of cooked rice mixed with black sesame seeds, honey, clarified butter, milk, and sugar or jaggery. It represents the subtle body of the ancestor. By offering pindas with the correct mantra and sankalpa, the descendant provides nourishment to the ancestor's subtle form in Pitru Loka.

The Garuda Purana (Pretakalpa, Chapter 3) describes how tarpana (water) satisfies the ancestor's thirst, and pinda (rice ball) satisfies their hunger in the subtle world.

Offering Procedure

  1. After completing Tarpana, prepare the Pinda ingredients.
  2. Mix cooked rice with black sesame, honey, ghee, milk, and sugar to form a stiff dough.
  3. Form 3 balls — one for each of the 3 Pitru generations (Vasu, Rudra, Aditya).
  4. Place the pindas on fresh kusha grass spread on the ground, facing south.
  5. Recite the Pinda Mantra for each — stating the gotra and name of each ancestor.
  6. Additional pindas may be formed for the maternal lineage.
  7. After the ritual, carry the pindas to a river, pond, sacred tank, or the sea and immerse them.
  8. If no water body is nearby, they may be placed at the base of a sacred tree (Peepal/Ashwattha).
