🔱 Tripundra — 7 Layers of Symbolism
The three sacred lines of Shiva contain the entire cosmos
≡
The three horizontal lines of Tripundra are not mere marks — they encode the fundamental principles of Shaiva cosmology. Each line simultaneously represents seven sets of three cosmic principles.
1

Three Gunas
Sattva (Purity & Goodness)Rajas (Activity & Passion)Tamas (Inertia & Darkness)
3
Three Vedas
Rig Veda (Knowledge)Yajur Veda (Ritual)Sama Veda (Melody)
4
Three Worlds (Lokas)
Bhuh (Earth)Bhuvah (Intermediate)Svaha (Heaven)
5
Three Times
Bhuta (Past)Vartamana (Present)Bhavisyat (Future)
6
Three Sacred Fires

7
Three States of Consciousness
Jagrat (Waking)Svapna (Dream)Sushupti (Deep Sleep)
The Fourth Line: The Bindu
Sometimes a red or white dot (bindu) is added between the eyebrows, within the three lines. This represents the third eye of Shiva — the eye of wisdom (Jnana Chakshu) that sees beyond duality. It is Ajna chakra, the command center of consciousness.
