📖 How to Apply Tilak
A complete step-by-step guide for applying sacred marks across traditions
Note: Tilak application varies by tradition, region, and personal practice. When learning, consult with your guru or elder in the sampradaya for guidance specific to your lineage.
Purification
Begin with a bath or at least wash your hands, face, and feet. Apply tilak after morning puja or before any religious activity.
Prepare the Material
For Vibhuti: take a pinch of sacred ash in your left palm. For Gopichandana: grind the clay stick on a stone with a few drops of water to form a smooth paste. For Sindoor: take a small amount on the tip of a ring finger.
Choose Your Tradition
Shaiva: Apply Tripundra — three horizontal lines across the forehead. Vaishnava: Apply Urdhva Pundra — U-shaped mark pointing upward. Shakta: Apply a round bindu or vertical line with kumkum.
Apply the Mark
Shaiva Tripundra: Use three middle fingers, draw left to right. Vaishnava Urdhva Pundra: Use ring finger, draw bottom to top. Always apply with your dominant hand, with devotional focus.
Recite the Mantra
While applying, recite the relevant mantra. For Tripundra: "Om Namah Shivaya" or the Tripundra mantra. For Urdhva Pundra: Recite the 12 names of Vishnu for each body point.
Additional Body Points
For full practice, apply at other body points: throat (Vishuddha), chest (Anahata), navel (Manipura), both shoulders, both upper arms, both forearms. Each point has its own significance.
