Panchakarma — पंचकर्म

The five purification therapies of Ayurveda — deep cleansing and rejuvenation at the cellular level

⚕️ Clinical Supervision Required

Panchakarma is a medical procedure that must be performed under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician (Vaidya). This educational content is for reference only — do not attempt self-treatment.

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma (Sanskrit: पंचकर्म = "Five Actions") is Ayurveda's most powerful detoxification and rejuvenation protocol. Unlike simple cleanses, it eliminates toxins (Ama) from deep tissues (Dhatu) through bio-purification, not mere palliation.

Described in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita over 3,000 years ago, Panchakarma follows three stages: Poorva Karma (Preparation) → Pradhana Karma (Main therapies) → Paschat Karma (Post-therapy care).

Charaka declares: "Samshodhana is superior to Samshamana" — Purification is superior to palliative care.

The Three-Stage Process

Every Panchakarma procedure follows this three-phase protocol

  • Snehana (Internal) → Medicated ghee/oil by mouth — saturate tissues
  • Snehana (External) → Full-body Abhyanga daily
  • Swedana → Steam therapy to liquefy and mobilise Ama
