What is Ayurveda?
Derived from Sanskrit: Ayur (life) + Veda (knowledge/science)
Ancient Origins
Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest medical systems, documented in the Atharva Veda and further developed in classical texts like Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam. It recognizes that each person is unique and therefore requires an individualized approach to health.
Holistic Philosophy
Unlike modern medicine that often focuses on disease treatment, Ayurveda emphasizes disease prevention and the promotion of longevity. It addresses the root causes of illness by balancing the three Doshas (biological humors) — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — through diet, lifestyle, herbs, and therapies.
The Three Doshas
The fundamental energies governing all physical and mental processes
Vata
वात
Air + Ether
Creative, quick-thinking, thin build. Prone to anxiety, dry skin, constipation when imbalanced.
Pitta
पित्त
Fire + Water
Intelligent, determined, medium build. Prone to inflammation, irritability, excess heat when imbalanced.
Kapha
कफ
Earth + Water
Calm, compassionate, strong build. Prone to weight gain, lethargy, congestion when imbalanced.
