Astra vs Shastra Guide
अस्त्र · शस्त्र · दिव्यास्त्र
Understanding the three-tier classification of divine weapons in Hindu scripture — from physical melee to mantra-invoked cosmic forces.
The Three Classifications
Shastra — Physical Melee
A Shastra is a hand-held weapon that requires direct physical contact to be effective. Shiva's Trishula, Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra (melee use), and Parashurama's Parashu are classic Shastras. They embody physical force, will, and the direct expression of divine power.
• Trishula — Shiva's trident
• Khadga — sacred sword
• Gada — Vishnu's mace
• Parashu — Parashurama's axe
• Nandaka — Vishnu's sword
Astra — Projectile Ranged
An Astra is typically projectile-based — arrows, bows, lances, or weapons that are thrown or launched. Arjuna's Gandiva, Rama's Kodanda, and various divine arrows fall into this category. They represent precision, focus, and dharmic discipline.
• Gandiva — Arjuna's divine bow
• Kodanda — Rama's bow
• Bana/Shara — sacred arrows
• Shakti — Kartikeya's spear
• Shabd-Bhedi — sound-tracking arrow
Divyastra — Cosmic Divine
A Divyastra transcends physical reality. Invoked through sacred mantra, it channels divine cosmic energy. The Brahmastra can destroy entire armies; Pashupatastra can end creation itself. They must never be used without absolute necessity — misuse invites cosmic disaster.
• Brahmastra — cosmic destroyer
• Pashupatastra — Shiva's supreme weapon
• Narayanastra — unstoppable homing
• Brahmanda Astra — universe-level
• Nag Paash — serpent-binding
