14 Vahanas — The Divine Vehicles

A Vahana (वाहन) is not merely a vehicle — it represents the quality upon which a deity's power is founded. Each deity "rides upon" a principle or force.

What is a Vahana?

In Sanatan Dharma, a Vahana represents a cosmic principle that the deity embodies and governs. When Shiva rides Nandi (the bull), it means Shiva stands upon Dharma. When Vishnu rides Garuda, Vishnu moves upon the solar force of liberation. The Vahana is an extension of the deity's nature — often worshipped alongside the deity in temples.
