How to Offer Naivedya

A complete guide to the proper offering of sacred food to the deity — the transition from Naivedya to Prasad.

Naivedya vs Prasad

Naivedya — food offered to the deity. The act of offering. It is not yet Prasad.
Prasad — food received back from the deity, blessed by the divine presence. The same food after offering.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Prepare the offering

Use only Sattvik food — no onion, garlic, non-vegetarian items. Ensure the food is fresh and freshly prepared. Do not taste the food before offering.

2

Purify with Achamana

Perform Achamana (sipping of sacred water) before touching the Naivedya items. Wash hands and be in a state of ritual purity.

3

Place before the deity

Place the food on a clean plate (ideally silver, copper, or banana leaf). Set it before the deity's murti or picture with reverence.

4

Chant the Naivedya mantra

Place the right hand over the offering and chant: "ॐ नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि" (Om naivédyam samarpayami). This sanctifies the offering.

5

Offer water (Achamana)

Offer a small amount of water (Udakam) after the Naivedya as per the 16-step puja (Shodashopachar) format.

6

Wait — then distribute as Prasad

Leave the offering before the deity for a few minutes. After the puja is complete, distribute the food as Prasad to family members and guests.

Receiving Prasad with Devotion

  • Receive with both hands extended (Anjali mudra)
  • Bow the head slightly as Prasad is placed in hands
  • Do not drop or discard Prasad — treat with respect
  • Consume promptly or share; store briefly if needed
  • Do not sell Prasad — it is a gift from the divine
