🧘 HOW TO PRACTICE MUDRAS

A Beginner's Guide to Mudra Practice

GENERAL PRINCIPLES

  • Wash hands before practice — mudras are sacred gestures
  • Practice with intention — know the meaning before forming the gesture
  • Gentle pressure — fingers should touch but not strain
  • Yoga mudras: practice 5–45 minutes; puja mudras: form and release
  • Best times: early morning (brahma muhurta), during puja, during meditation
  • Hasta mudras for dance: practice daily with a mirror to check form

6-STEP BEGINNER SEQUENCE

1
Start with Anjali Mudra

Both palms together at chest. This is the universal greeting, prayer, and centering gesture. Hold for 1–2 minutes while breathing deeply.

2
Learn Chin Mudra

Index finger touches thumb tip, other fingers extended. Rest hands on knees, palms up. Practice during morning meditation for 5–10 minutes.

3
Learn Abhaya Mudra

Right hand raised, palm facing forward. Stand or sit and hold for 30 seconds, feeling the energy of protection and fearlessness.

4
Practice Pataka

All four fingers extended and joined, thumb bent across palm. This foundational hasta has 30+ uses — learn 5 viniyoga per week.

5
Combine with Breath

For yoga mudras: inhale as you form the mudra, hold breath while maintaining, release as you release the mudra. This synchronizes prana.

6
Add to Puja

During daily puja, incorporate Pushpanjali (offering flowers), Dhenu (purifying offerings), and Namaskara. Do each deliberately, not mechanically.
