🗿 Murti Shastra

The canonical science of image-making — proportional measurement (tala), posture (asana), attribute placement, and the rite that turns stone or bronze into a living god: Prana Pratishtha.

📏 Tala — Proportional Measurement

A tala equals one face-length (chin to hairline). The height of a murti is counted in talas, graded by spiritual rank. The Manasara, Mayamata, and Shilparatna codify these systems.

🔥 Prana Pratishtha — Consecration Rite

Until prana (life-breath) is invoked, a murti is merely stone. Prana Pratishtha is the Agamic rite that transfers consciousness into the image, making it a living god worthy of worship.

  1. Netra-unmilana — the "opening of eyes" with a golden needle; sight is given.
  2. Adhivasa — immersion in sanctified waters, grains, honey, and ghee overnight.
  3. Nyasa — mantras assigned to body-parts of the image by the acharya.
  4. Prana-avahana — breath invoked with Pranava (Om) and bija mantras.
  5. Chakshur-dana — final gift of vision; first darshan to the devotees.
  6. Mahabhisheka — grand ablution with panchamrita and pure water.
