Musical Forms

Dhrupad

The oldest surviving classical form, 4 sections: Sthayi, Antara, Sanchari, Abhog

  • Austere, devotional
  • Pakhawaj accompaniment
  • 4 main styles (Banis)

Khayal

The most popular form today, in two tempos: Vilambit and Drut

  • Elaborate improvisation
  • Tabla accompaniment
  • Dominant for 250+ years

Thumri

Semi-classical form, devotional and romantic lyrics

  • Shringar rasa focus
  • Leeway for melody
  • Bol-banao style

Tarana

Abstract syllables sung in fast tempo

  • Persian syllables (Odin, Odini)
  • Rapid rhythmic patterns
  • Often concludes concerts

Tappa

Origin in folk music of Punjab and Sindh

  • Rapid turns and gamaks
  • Shor (rapid tans)
  • Associated with Shori Mian

Dadra

Lighter semi-classical, in Dadra tala (6 beats)

  • Folk-influenced melodies
  • Simple structure
  • Often follows Thumri

Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande classified all Hindustani ragas into 10 parent scales (Thaats).
